This resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate and engaging comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Norton Juster’s 'The Phantom Tollbooth.’ Teachers have found them particularly useful in comprehension or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of children towards meeting the KS2 expectations within the new National Curriculum framework. Children love learning from these resources, whilst they are also of great use to teachers, as there is explicit information within each task regarding which comprehension strands the task is designed to demonstrate. They also relate to key extracts, characters, and themes from the story, ensuring that children gain a deep understanding of the text. Activities within the booklet include: ‘An Interview with Milo’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Understand what is read by drawing on information from more than one paragraph, identifying key details that support the main ideas, and using quotations for illustration;’ ‘Juster’s Description’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Explain meanings of words that they know and ask the meaning of new words. Link the meaning of new words to words that they already know;’ ‘Tock’s and Rhyme and Reason’s Character Profiles!’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Understand what is read by drawing on information from more than one paragraph, identifying key details that support the main ideas, and using quotations for illustration;’ 'Figurative Language in ‘The Phantom Tollbooth’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Discuss and evaluate how authors use language, including figurative language, to create an impact on the reader.’ Plus many, many more activities (the booklet is 21 pages in length!) This engaging and informative set of resources aids students in developing an understanding of prime and composite numbers. Throughout the lesson, students improve their skills at identifying multiples and factors, establishing whether numbers up to 100 are prime, and using the vocabulary of prime numbers and composite numbers appropriately. This writing assessment framework has been designed to allow to teachers to accurately assess student attainment against the writing expectations of the new National Curriculum. They are perfect for use when gauging the standard of extended writing pieces. These are to be used when assessing writing for Years 3-6, progressing towards the end of Key Stage 2 expectations. The expectations for each year group are split into four subcategories: Spelling, Handwriting, Composition, and VGP (Vocabulary, Grammar, and Punctuation). Within each subcategory are statements relating to the expectations for the year group. Teachers simply mark the extent to which the statement has been achieved (utilising the key at the bottom of the page) and then use best fit to determine the overall standard of the writing. In addition to the Word documents (allowing you to edit if you need to) I've also added the documents as a PDF, in case the formatting differs on your computer.

The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: Knowledge harvesting what they know about key contextual features, and developing a contextual understanding of John Keats’ life; Reading and interpreting the poem, using a provided line-by-line analysis, and interactive group activities; Developing their understanding through inferring and analysing key language and structural choices; Analysing how the themes of youth, age and loss of life are conveyed through Keats’ language and structure choices; Self/ Peer assessing each others’ learning attempts. This engaging, comprehensive lesson aims to improve students’ understanding of the ‘boat-stealing’ extract from William Wordsworth’s poem 'The Prelude’ (the section of the poem covered by most GCSE exam boards). These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s comprehension of several extracts from Roald Dahl texts. There are three sessions included in total - one session each for the following Roald Dahl texts: -George’s Marvellous Medicine -The Twits -The Magic Finger Each presentation contains a link to the relevant online chapters (on the first slide). This is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The sessions are best suited for children in years 2-3, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. This style of whole class reading, in which you are able to dip into a different text each day, is great for broadening the number of texts that children are exposed to and increasing their enthusiasm for reading.

This fun and original collective worship aids children in understanding the value of being patient, through: Understanding what patience is, and recognising why it is important; Understanding the relevance and importance of patience in Christianity; Looking at examples of patient and impatient behaviour (including through personal examples and acting out an adapted version of 'The Tortoise and the Hare), and determining the impact that it has on the individuals and others around them; Learning strategies to demonstrate patience in their own lives. The session includes a comprehensive, engaging PowerPoint presentation, hyperlinks to relevant and interesting video clips, and both a PDF and Word copy of the script for the fable. There are also various discussion prompts to enable children to understand how patience is considered in the Bible, and also to guide them in how they can be patient in their own lives. The slides are fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included guiding notes to assist the speaker. Hope that you find this useful!

This engaging and informative enables students to make precise and detailed interpretations of H.G. Wells’ language choices in describing the Martians in ‘The War of the Worlds.’ Students identify and analyse the effect of Wells’ writing, using their understanding of various language devices, before applying these concepts to their own descriptive writing attempts. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: Defining and exemplifying the descriptive writing techniques, through a fun and interactive activity; Identifying the language techniques that Wells uses in his description of the Martians;’ Analysing the effectiveness of Wells’ descriptive writing; Creating their own descriptions of imagined aliens, using Wells’ model example and the techniques that they have gathered over the course of the lesson; Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts, using a clear success criteria; Included is: Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive; Card sorting cards Selected extracts printed onto one sheet (from Book 1, Chapter 4 and Book 2, Chapter 2). There are also opportunities for group learning, speaking and listening, peer assessment, and whole class discussion. I originally used these resources with year 10 and 11 classes, however colleagues have used them for between year 9 and year 13 with some adaptations. In this engaging lesson, children are provided with an introductory understanding of the life Florence Nightingale, through learning about: -who she was and what she did; -when she lived and what life was like at the time; -her lasting achievements. The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey: -Knowledge harvesting - gauging what children already know about Florence Nightingale, inferring additional information from a picture clue, and gathering what else they would like to know; -Understanding when she lived through a timeline activity; -Gathering information about her life and her achievements through watching an age-appropriate, interesting video (hyperlinked) and answering questions about what they have learnt; -Completing plenary activities to demonstrate their understanding of each of the concepts learnt in the lesson; -Self-reflecting on the extent to which they feel they have met the learning objective. Included is the comprehensive PowerPoint presentation (around 23 slides) and the links to the video.
